Conclusion

In the beginning of my blog, I stated that sense of belonging is an important thing in ones life, which can be seen when people from different countries are attached to the community they belong to even when they are being far away from their country. This sense of belonging sometimes appears in a form of their clothing, the way they talk, and especially on what they consume.

As an international student from Indonesia, I really feel what a sense of belonging really is, especially in terms of what I eat. Never in my two years living in United States, I experienced a day without eating Asian food. My experience really makes me questions about whether that sense of belonging could be taken away from a person, in this case is me. So as an experiment I tried to blend into the Western culture and strip away my sense of belonging to Asian culture by changing my eating habit. Starting my 14 days experiment, everything seemed so easy. At first I thought about it as exciting because I get to eat many types of new dishes. I refused invitations to eat Asian food from my friends and I would go to Western restaurants. Sometimes I even encourage my Asian friends to eat Western food with me. However, as the days proceeded, my mind started to change. Even though the Western food was good, I missed eating Asian food.  I figured that Western food contains too much cheese. I would prefer the taste of the spices, chili, rice, essentially: everything Asian.
However, as I was doing my experiment, I realized that there were some similarities between Asian food and Western food. The most obvious one can be seen in the types of food available for breakfast. For breakfast, I usually eat Mantao, which is a sweet bread dough, or just plain bread with condensed milk, which are all very sweet. When I did this experiment, I usually eat Fruit Loops with milk and honey granola bar, which are also sweet. So I conclude that both Western and Asian breakfast are usually sweet. Moreover, I also found some similarities on the main courses I tried during this experiment. On the second, fifth, tenth, twelfth, and thirteenth days, I ate pasta. On the eleventh day, I finally realize that the reason I constantly eat pasta during this experiment is because pasta resembles Asian noodles, specifically an Indonesian dish called Mie. In Indonesia, I eat Mie with garlic, spices, and various kinds of meat, such as beef, chicken, pork, and even seafood. Italian pasta also has the same characteristic, whereas in my experiment I ate different kinds of pasta with garlic, chicken, seafood, and beef. Other than that, I also realized that the Buffalo wings resemble Indonesian Ayam Goreng. It is basically chicken wings marinated with spices and then deep-fried, which is similar to the way Buffalo wings were cooked.  Other parts of Asia, such as China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Thailand also have this dish.
From this experiment, I learn that a sense of belonging is hard to leave behind because that is just my habit as I am growing. I have to admit that as I went through the days, I just really want to abandon the assignment and go to Indonesian, Chinese, Japanese, or other Asian restaurants. Aside from that, the types of Western dishes I picked mostly have the same characteristics of some Asian dishes. I believe there are other Western dishes that have entirely different characteristics from Asian food, but I chose to eat the ones that have some similarities. It shows that I personally still tried to approach my kind of comfort food. As a result, I conclude that although possible, it is hard for a person to give up a sense of belonging or identity to a certain culture, especially if the person had been growing with that culture all his or her life. Until this moment, if I were offered to go to a Western restaurant or a Chinese restaurant, I would probably still choose to go to a Chinese restaurant.

Day 14

Finally, I reached the last day of the experiment! I am so proud of myself, even though it was just 14 days. At first, committing to this experiment was hard because I never had experienced not eating Asian food at all for a day in my whole life. Now I can eat Western food everyday. Even though now I am starting to get used to eat Western food, I still love Asian food and I do not think that I am going to stop eating it.

For lunch, I ate a bacon cheeseburger at the school cafeteria.

For the grand finale, I decided to close the experiment by eating the food from one of the famous fast food chain in the United States:

The most popular Kentucky Fried Chicken.

With 12 million customers everyday around the world, Kentucky Fried Chicken really holds the label as the most popular American restaurant chain. I think my experiment is not complete without eating the famous American fried chicken. Although there are a lot of experiments that prove that this chicken is very not healthy and are bad for the environment, I personally still enjoy the taste of the chicken. With that said, I am going to end this experiment.

Day 13

Today, I slept until the afternoon. Because I was very hungry when I woke up, I asked my friends to accompany me to go to a late lunch in Santana Row. The restaurant I picked this time is Pizza Antica because I thought pizza is one of the most authentic Western foods. Pizza Antica offers Roman style pizzas, which are usually thin crusted. They make sure that the dough they use to make the pizza is chewy and crispy by checking it three days earlier. They also offer Italian style appetizers and pasta. It is indeed one of the best restaurants in Santa Row judged by the queue of the customers.  For lunch, I ordered the Prince Edward Island Mussels as the appetizer, Spicy Fennel Sausage Portobello Mushroom and Roasted Onion Pizza, Spaghetti with Tomato Coserva, Garlic and Basil, and Fisherman’s Style Linguine with Clams and Chorizo.

I really enjoyed the food and I can feel that I am already get used to eat this kind of food. In the previous posts, I talked about how Western food made me feel fatter. Surprisingly, when I weighed myself today, I found out that I lost 5 pounds. It was very strange because everyday I kind of feel load up after eating Western food, but the fact is that I lost weight. I began to feel that the carbohydrates and the fat that I got from the Western food is nothing compared to the ones in Asian food. I am guessing that the amount rice I gave up in 13 days so far is what's causing my weight loss.
Even though rice has a lot of nutrients, the carbohydrate content could be converted to glycogen or fatty acids if not used, which are later stored as body fat. So eating a lot of rice is not beneficial at all. However, rice is the food that I grew up with. So giving up rice is not that easy even though I began to get used to the Western food.

Day 12

I have to admit that I am starting to get used to the Western style food. Today I started my day by eating Fruit Loops, which I really enjoyed. After making tons of my homework assignments, I went to Valley Fair Mall for lunch. My friends and I decided to eat at California Pizza Kitchen, which is believed to be a leader in authentic California-style cuisine. Their menu is interesting. I ordered the Baby Clam Linguini with Lemon Cream Sauce and the Jambalaya pasta.
Baby Clam Linguini
Jambalaya
It tasted really good. The linguini ingredients are garlic baby clams, fresh Italian parsley, Parmesan cheese, white wine sauce, red pepper flakes, light lemon cream cause, and fresh basil leaves. Whereas the Jambalaya, which is a Louisiana dish that had Spanish and French influence, contains blackened chicken and shrimp in a spicy Jambalaya sauce with crawfish, sausage and ham served with linguini pasta. I know an Asian dish that really resembles the Jambalaya, which is the Malaysian Mee Goreng.

Both of them taste spicy and also got sort of smoked flavor. From the picture, they both really look alike.Did you notice that I eat a lot of pasta? I think it is because it resembles the Asian noodles like I said before on the last post.

After that, I spent the rest of the day making assignments for the next crazy final week. I feel that I was pretty productive today because I finished a total of three assignments. Later after that, for dinner I went to Boiling Crab, which is a little yet famous restaurant that is located in San Jose. The restaurant was originated from a little town in Southeastern Texas called Seadrift for the family of crabbers and fishermen to enjoy their catch of the week.  They are famous for their fresh cooked seafood and the “Sha Bang” sauce, a mixture of Cajun dressing, lemon pepper, and garlic butter. However, to eat there, people have to wait in the line for at least two hours.  But I personally think that it is worth it. After three hours of waiting, I ordered a bag of shrimp with mild “Sha Bang” sauce and French fries. It tasted really nice with a perfect bland of tastes between the spicy Cajun and the tangy lemon.

Day 11

Every Friday I have a volunteer hour in West Valley Community Service from 8pm to 11.15pm. I got up late today so I had to rush to the volunteer event. I did not get a chance to eat breakfast so I ended up eating a bagful of Cheddar Flavor Sun Chips. What I like about Sun Chips is that not only it provides healthy snacks, it also helps to sustain the environment. It contains 18 grams of whole grains and low saturated fat and cholesterol per ounce serving, which could reduce the risk of heart disease than eating other kinds of chips. Moreover, it helps the environment by providing a way to capture sun’s ray energy to produce 145,000 bags of Sun Chips, using solar energy instead of fossil fuel in their production plants, and having a 100% compostable chips bags. Not to mention its tasty flavor. I am in love with my new snack. For lunch, I went to Wingstop and ate chicken wings with lemon pepper and garlic parmesan dressing, a couple of boneless chicken strips, and french fries.

I was curious about the history of chicken wings, so I looked it up online and found an interesting story about it. Chicken wings or Buffalo wings were obviously first created in Buffalo, New York, in a restaurant called Frank & Teressa’s Anchor Bar, by its owner Teressa Bellisimo on October 30, 1964. On that Friday night, Teressa’s son, Dom Bellisimo was working at the family bar and suddenly his friends decided to crash because they were really hungry. So he told them to wait until midnight so they could have what they wanted while asking for his mother to cook something for them. About 20 minutes later, Teressa brought two plates and set them on the bar. Dom and his friends were curious about what was on the plate. Terressa was about to make chicken soup for them and she said, “ It’s a shame to put such beautiful wings in a stock pot.” Instead, she created sauce and fried those wings and the rest is history.
These chicken wings make me think about Indonesian traditional Ayam Goreng (fried chicken). When I was still in Indonesia, Ayam Goreng is my comfort food. It is made from chicken wings mixed with Indonesian spices and then deep-fried. It has the same method of cooking with the Buffalo wings, but with different dressing or sauce. It is really interesting to find that there are some similarities between Asian and Western cuisine.

Day 10

I started my day with a touch of Fruit Loops today. Of all things the Western food, I was still excited to eat this colorful breakfast. What makes me love it is when the really nice combination between the sweetness of the Fruit Loops combine with a glass of fresh 2% milk. Nothing beats the taste of that breakfast. Because today I really craved for Asian noodles, such as Japanese ramen, Indonesian pork noodle, Chinese chicken noodle, that could literally make me crazy, I decided to make what is so called “Western Noodle” for my late-lunch-early-dinner time. I looked for recipes online, and I found one noodle that resembles Asian noodle, which is Spaghetti Aglio Olio. Aglio Olio is a conventional Italian pasta dish that is frequently associated with rural home-style cooking and is traditionally served over long pasta, such as spaghetti, fettuccine, linguine, or angel hair. Surprisingly, the types of Asian noodles that I mentioned earlier are usually served as a “comfort food”, which is often served as home-cooked meals. Looks like I just found another one that resembles between Asian and Western food.

The fact that it used garlic and chili as its main ingredients really resembled the way that Chinese and Indonesian noodles are made, which is with mostly garlic. Moreover, it looks like it’s really simple to make.

Day 9

Today marks the beginning of the Lent season with the day of Ash Wednesday.

For all Catholics, today we were supposed to be fasting, meaning that we have to eat fully only once a day, you can eat snacks during the day but only one full meal. So I decided to have my full meal after my POLI 3 class, which was around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I went to the cafeteria to get a bacon cheeseburger. Because I have a friend who works in the burger counter, I get this very extraordinary burger with tons of bacon. When I was ready to eat my only full meal of the day, my friend came up to me and said that on a fasting day, you are not supposed to eat meat also. Sadly, I have to abandon the burger and bought a slice of vegetarian pizza and a bag of Cheetos. Here is the picture of my meal today.
I looks mouth-watering, but I personally think it does not taste as good as it looks. I do not know why, maybe it was because I started to feel tired of eating Western food everyday, or it was because the pizza is just not that good. Either way, this doesn't alter the fact that I really do miss eating Asian food that I'm so used to.
